Saint-Aubin du Cormier, France

The name Cormier probably originated in the commune of Saint-Aubin-du-Cormier in the region of Britanny in the northwest of France. The town was founded in 1223 (early Middle Ages) when Peter I of Britain, Duke of Brittany, built a castle near a tiny village. It became one of his favourite places to spend his time because of the fresh air and the good hunting. In 1225 the Prince granted an edict which gave extensive privileges to area residents, including tax exemption, and use of the woods. The market, founded in 1227, was very popular dealing in honey, fabrics, wax, salt and farm implements. Already there were several inns in the village, as well as the prison of the Duke of Orleans.

My grandmother MARGUERITE MARY CORMIER was born on July 10, 1904 in Sainte-Marie-de-Kent, New Brunswick, Canada. I always thought she was from Bouctouche but Sainte-Marie is very closeby. She married STANLEY ELLIS October 13, 1936 in St. Luke's Church, Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. I have fond memories of my Nanny because she lived with my family from about the time I was 12, and then again for a short time after I was married and had my children. She grew up speaking French and often encouraged me to speak French with her. I never realized that this one trait would later be so significant in my research. It turns out that the Cormier family played a very special part in Acadian history, being one of the very first families to immigrate from France in the 1600's.

She died in 1983 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Stanley and Margaret (as she came to be known) had 6 children:
  • Robert John Ellis 1936 -
  • Jean Ellis 1937 -
  • Francis Ellis 1938 -
  • Marjorie Ellis
  • Clarence Ellis
  • Allan Ellis
