Slauenwhite ~ Generation 1

My grandfather BENJAMIN WILFRED SLAUENWHITE was born on March 1, 1896 in Northwest Arm, Halifax, Nova Scotia.  He married  DOROTHY AUSTIN PRATT on September 29, 1923 in St. John the Baptist, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Benjamin died on August 5, 1947 in Halifax, NS. of what they called 'natural causes'. My mother believes he died from something related to his lungs, perhaps uncontrolled allergies or emphysema. She remembers that he often had difficulty breathing.

Benjamin and Dorothy had 7 children:
  • Dorothy Gwendolyn Slauenwhite 1924 - 2002
  • Agnes Helen Slauenwhite 1925 - 2007
  • Edith Irene Slauenwhite 1927 - 2000
  • Lenta May Slauenwhite 1928 -
  • Benjamin Standen Slauenwhite 1931 - 2010
  • Margaret Rose Slauenwhite 1936 -
  • Evelyn Ann Slauenwhite 1941 -
  • Marilyn Agnes 1943 -

I love this photo of my mother with her father. She told me that she was sleeping on his old army blanket and she still remembers how terribly itchy it was.

From Lunenburg to St Margarets Bay
JOHANN JACOB SCHLAGENTWEIT was born on August 11, 1743 in Brackenhein, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany. He married MARIA ELIZABETH RIGOULEAU on December 16, 1766 in St. John's Anglican, Lunenburg, NS. Though all the German immigrants were Lutherans, they worshiped in the Anglican Church until Zion Lutheran Church was completed in 1772. Johann Jacob Schlagentweit made a tiny donation of money toward the building of the Lutheran Church (1770-71); signed the membership roll of 1775; appears in the church account book 1774-80, and was a contributor for the "Solarium" (the minister's salary), 1773-1774. The land belonging to Joseph was subdivided at the time of his death, with Johann Jacob receiving land to build on near the Blockhouse-Lunenburg road.

In 1798, on the invitation of Governor Parr, Johan Jacob and other families of the district, e.g., members of the Dauphinee, Hubley, and Boutilier families, resettled to the St. Margaret's Bay area. Records for marriages and baptisms for the descendants of John Jacob and Maria Elizabeth following their move to St. Margaret's Bay, were found at St. Paul's Anglican Church, Halifax and St. Stephen's Anglican Church, Chester.

As you can see, from this one couple we have 3 separate family lines, which makes things a little bit complicated. On this page I've decided to follow the Johann Friedrich line and I'll put the other 2 lines on separate pages.

Johann and Maria had 13 children:
  • Frederica Elizabeth Slaughenwhite 1768 - 1780
  • Johann Friedrich Slaughenwhite 1769 - 1824
  • Susanna Elizabeth Slaughenwhite 1771 - ?
  • Franciska Catharina Slaughenwhite 1774 - 1847

  • Maria Magdalena Slaughenwhite 1777 - 1818
  • Johann Martin Slaughenwhite 1779 - ?
  • Johan Jacob Slaughenwhite 1782 - 1869
  • Maria Elizabetha (Polly) Slaughenwhite 1784 - 1827
  • Johanna (Hanna) Slaughenwhite 1786 - 1865
  • Maria Sophia Dorothea Slaughenwhite 1788 - 1869

Slauenwhite ~ Generation 8

TOBIAS SCHLAGENTWEIT was born in 1678 in Derdingen, Neckarkreis, Wurttemberg, Germany, but it is not verified that the elder Tobias was his father. We can only surmise that it is correct. The records show that he was a linen weaver in Derdingen, the village next to Sternenfels (Maria's village). Today, Derdingen is divided into Oberderdingen and Untterderdingen. There are two marriages for Tobias; first to an Ann Elizabeth and then to our ancestor MARIA MAGDELENA BLICKENSDOERFER. They were married on November 11, 1705 in the Sternenfels Evangelical Church, Wurttemberg.

He died on December 25, 1757 in Sternenfels, Wurttemberg.
Tobias and Maria Magdelena had 10 children:
  • Anna Maria Schlagentweit 1706 - ?
  • Johan Georg Philip Schlagentweit 1708 - ?
  • Joseph Schlagentweit abt. 1709 - 1783
  • Sophia Barbara Schlagentweit 1711 - ?
  • Tobias Schlagentweit Jr 1714 - bef 1723
  • Maria Magdelena Schlagentweit 1716 - ?
  • Johann Jacob Schlagentweit 1718 - ?
  • Johannes Schlagentweit 1720 - ?
  • Tobias Schlagentweit 1723 - ?
  • Margareta Salome Schlagentweit 1725 - ?

Slauenwhite ~ Generation 9

TOBIAS SCHLAGENTWEIT was born about 1650 in Wieboldshausen, Ansbach. He married SOPHIA BARBARA.

Admittedly, there is no proof that Tobias is the father of these 4 sons, or that they even had the same father. However, all 3 appear in Derdingen at the same time as adults. Records in Derdingen state that Simon was a stonemason, and had formerly been one in Wieboldshausen. Wieboldshausen is probably now known as Wiebelsheim, near Ansbach. There is an IGI record which gives Tobias as the father of Simon.

Tobias died in Ansbach, Wurttemberg or Baden.

Tobias and Sophia had 4 children:
  • Hans Jacob Schlagentweit 1675 - ?
  • Tobias Schlagentweit 1678 - 1757
  • Simon Schlagentweit 1687 - ?
  • Johannes Schlagentweit 1696 - 1760
